School Board meets Friday to consider City’s Pacific View offer and postpone the auction!
In the nick of time, the Encinitas City Council voted to tender a confidential offer to the Encinitas Union School District to purchase the Pacific View property at the climax of its Wednesday, March 19 meeting. The council voted 3-2, with councilmembers Kristin Gaspar and Mark Muir dissenting, to respond to EUSD Superintendent Baird’s March 17 letter to the council (see below) by submitting an offer before the Friday deadline Baird had specified.
The announcement came just before 11 p.m. after a long discussion that included several emphatic Save Pacific View speakers and a 45-minute closed-door city council session. Encinitas City Attorney Glenn Sabine ended the meeting with a one-sentence report: “The city council, on a three-to-two vote with Muir and Gaspar voting no, directed the mayor to submit a confidential offer to the Encinitas Union School District for purposes of postponing the public auction and acquiring the Pacific View school property site.”
Because the terms of the city council’s offer are confidential, it’s difficult to predict how the district will respond. But when the council returned from its closed session, there was a sense that this offer will be far more substantial than its original $4.3 million bid from last December. The hope is that the council’s overture will be enough to convince Baird and the school board to postpone the auction and engage in direct negotiations with the city to cement the details of the purchase.
